when it rains...

...now that I've finally got 5 minutes to myself, I thought an update was required.

Unfinished Sky finished at the end of October, and I moved onto a TVC for a week, that finished and I moved onto the last week of a soapie shooting twin HD cameras.

so in the last 3 weeks, I've worked something like 170hrs, on 3 very different styles of production.

Type 1 - single cam FILM (feature), to be honest, this is still my preferred way of working. You're doing dialog, there's a little time to get the lighting right, rehearse, and shoot multiple takes if you need to.

Type 2 - Single cam FILM (TV commercial), it's an excellent break from any stress, as things move quite slow, and the let's face it, the dialog can't ever run over 0ne minute, as TVC's are generally cut for 30secs. So it's not too taxing, the money is good, and the food generally excellent. The only potential downsides are the extra time that you're hanging around whilst things are set-up (I don't care WHAT people say - it IS tiring just hanging about on set)

Type 3 - Multi cam VIDEO (TV soap) - WOW!!! How people manage to work for months/years on these shows just boggles the mind. I was preparing for a little increase in pace, but MAN was it a shock.

no time to boom, no time to sort out the shadows, no time to wire up the actors, no time for re-takes, no time for wild-lines, no time to tell half the crew that their start-time and location have changed...Pull in that second camera to shoot a close-up whilst shooting the Wide Establisher...

Needless to say that I'm not a huge fan of type 3.

it has stopped raining (in my metaphor) and I'm now hopefully going to enjoy a short break.

knowing my luck, my professional life will mimic the weather and I'll be in another drought.

oh well

cheers and thanks for taking the time.

Week one

Went pretty well, not much Dialog yet - so a lot of floating a mic around getting Fx.

The location is nice, not too noisy, and aside from some rain which threatened to make the road out completely inaccessable, it's all been good.

here's a photo or 3.

Sillhouette of our AC

Photo of our 2nd AC, boy Do I love misty shots right now.

And here's a tree that resides on the location.

oh well, wk. 2 here we come.

day off + ski days 4 and 5

after the little snow on friday, we decided to take the saturday as a rest day, and NOT ski...

most people would think we're stupid, but it turned out to be a great decision, as the skies were REALLY cloudy, there was a brisk wind, and no NEW snow *(that we hadn't already skied on).

so day off = drive around, look at things, head off to the HANMER SPRINGS natural hot pools to rest these poor little leg muscles.

on the way back, stopped in to see a movie in Christchurch. LADY IN THE WATER (not bad)

day 4 = clear skies, so taking lots of photos, one sequence of me hitting a little Rock-Drop.

day 5 = clear skies - moving into FOG, lots of FOG... Found my edges in the morning on the freshly groomed - VERY FAST.

and now it's done.

no more skiing for a little while.

I'm now thinking Central Canada (rocky mountains) sometime soon.

cheers

the 1st 3-days

started off with the whole airport thing...
Picked up a mascot (skip), listened to music and slept on the plane.

Arrived in christchurch, picked up the rental car, drove to the cathedral square, took some photos, then hit the road for Methven.

Next morning, up early to collect my buddy's skis etc, then drive the rocky-road up the mountain.

I haven't skied in 3 years - Leon more than 8, so we took it fairly easy on the beginner runs for the morning (whilst the snow was more like ice).

after a "reasonably priced" burger and cookie, we hit the rest of the mountain's softening snow (I hesitate to call it slush, as it's still relatively dry)

the rest of the day was simply amazing, trying to get my legs back, and remembering all the little things I used to be able to do.

totally wrecked.

Nice Dinner at the lodge.

Sleep

Ski day 2
up a little later, feeling the legs getting stiff.
not as good as the previous day - take a longer lunch.

Conditions improved, as did my skiing - I ditched the poles and focused on re-gaining control of my edges.

cool-fast-awesome.

this brings you up to date.

busy times

film is a fickle mistress. (I have no idea why I decided to choose that particular phrase)

things are either incredibly slow, or it's just ridiculously busy...

Ridiculously busy seems to be the order of the day.

there's talk of work in the air, every mixer I've worked with is busy.

I guess it's only a matter of time before I have to make choices that will affect my future in drastic ways.

now is NOT a good time to be going on a holiday - but stuff that!

NZ is having it's best season in more than 6 years, no way am I missing it.

look-out Mt Hutt - from september 5th to 12th, you're MINE

hee heee hee

when I know I'm going skiing' my mind seems to go a little wacky...

cheers

1st blog

woo hoo.

I was reading a blog by BTL (it was about good days vs bad days in film production) that made me think - I had a GOOD DAY last night; I'll reply and let them know.

then I mistakenly tried to reply as a "blogger" and somehow I ended up here.

man, I'm such a pushover.

oh well

now I have a blog.

Ian

P.S> the good day was indeed a short night shoot, simple plant mic in a car, with easy boomed dialog outside. the catering was awesome, the crew friendly (and I hadn't seen them in a while), director was very receptive to any concerns... in short it was all that is good in the sound department)
